PORFIDO ROSSO ANTICO. Porphyry: a compact, very hard, purple red stone dotted with minute white specks, from the isthmus of Suez, in the eastern Egypt, on the Gebel Dokhan mount, known to the Romans as Mons Porphyrites (from the red color of this stone) or Mons Igneus, Fire mountain. The Porfido Rosso Antico is the classic Roman stone, the symbol of the emperial power and honor. By the late empire, the royal purple stone (porphyry) helped to emphasize the changing role of the emperor as master and divinity, not just "first among equals". This marble was used in emperial tombs, wall panels, columns and vases, whose one of the most famous example is the round vase exposed in the Vatican museum. His high hardness limited strongly his usage in the sculpture, nevertheless the results are excellent.

Una pietra rossa compatta, molto dura, macchiata con piccoli puntini bianchi, proveniente dall'istmo di Suez, in Egitto, sul monte Gebel Dokhan, noto ai Romani come Mons Porphyrites (per il suo aspetto rossastro) o Mons Igneus, cioé montagna di fuoco. Il Porfido Rosso Antico é la pietra romana classica, simbolo del potere e dell'onore imperiale. Nel tardo impero ma pietra reale rossa enfatizzò il cambiamento di ruolo dell'Imperatore, da primo fra pari a semi-divinità. Fu usato nelle tombe imperiali, pannelli murari, colonne e vasi, fra i quali uno dei più famosi é esposto ai Musei Vaticani. La sua durezza ne limitò di molto l'impiego, tuttavia i risultati furono eccellenti.
