GIALLO ANTICO. This type of marble, giallo antico or numidic yellow, is a special type which is yellow in color and was quarried in ancient Numidia in north Africa. A variety of marble types were available in antiquity. The main sources were in the eastern Mediterranean, but it was not at all uncommon for huge quantities of marble to be shipped over very long distances, including overseas, in order to meet the Roman’s insatiable demand. The Roman trade in marbles was highly organized and progressive. Certain specialty types which tended to be always in demand, such as giallo antico, were shipped to their destinations in bulk, and kept in “marble-yards” until ready for use. In addition to this type of statuary, giallo antico was used in antiquity for columns, opus sectile and veneer. It was quarried by the Romans from the 2nd century BC until the late Roman period.

Il giallo Antico o Numidico é un tipo di marmo speciale che era estratto nell'antica regione nordafricana chiamata Numidia. Una gran quantità di marmi colorati era disponibile per soddisfare l'apparentemente insaziabile avidità dei Romani; alcuni marmi arrivavano addirittura dall'oriente e il commercio e il trasporto erano organizzati meticolosamente. Il Giallo Antico fu sempre molto richiesto, veniva trasportato a destinazione in forma grezza e conservato in apposite località, soprannominate "miglia di marmo", finche non era pronto per l'uso. Oltre che come marmo statuario, esso venne usato per colonne, rivestimenti e opus sectile. Fu estratto dal II° sec d.C. fino al tardo Impero, oggi le cave sono esaurite.
